Banks to provide mobile banking facility to customers by March end: Government

The Union Government has asked all banks to provide mobile banking facility to all customers by March 31, 2017. This is part of the government’s efforts to boost the digital payment system. Banks will run a nationwide campaign to ensure that every customer who has a mobile phone is enabled for mobile banking. Bank customers who are using UPI or BHIM app will be automatically be enabled for mobile banking.

Swachh Shakti Saptah campaign launched

The Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has launched week-long “Swachh Shakti Saptah” campaign to emphasize on active involvement of women in the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under this campaign, various events will be held till March 8, the International Women’s Day. Over 1,500 women Sarpanches of Swachh Bharat Mission are participating in it. PM Narendrra Modi will take part in closing ceremony of the campaign on March 8, 2017 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

South Korea, US begin large-scale military exercise

South Korean and United States held large-scale joint military exercise called Foal Eagle to test their defence readiness against the threat from North Korea. It will continue until the end of April 2017. The exercise comes amid heightened tension following the latest test launch of a ballistic missile by the North in February 2017.  South Korea also has signed agreement with US Lotte Group conglomerate to secure the land to station the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system. Similar exercise conducted by both countries in 2016 involved about 17,000 American troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans.

China to cut five lakh jobs in coal, steel sector

China has announced that it will cut five lakh jobs from steel, coal and other heavy industries to reduce excess production capacity amid slowdown of its economy which is world’s second largest. China produces more than half the world’s steel, but in recent times due to drop in global demand it has left the steel industry with massive overcapacity. China’s economy grew 6.7% year on year in 2016, the slowest pace of growth in 26 years from 6.9% in 2015.

Internet users in India to cross 450 million by June: Report

According to recently published report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI) and Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB), internet users in India are expected to be in the range of 450 to 465 million by June 2017. The report said that there were 432 million users in December 2016. Of them, about 269 million were in urban areas of the country. It held that urban India has close to 60% internet penetration, reflecting a level of saturation. Whereas rural India, with only 17% penetration, still has a large scope of development.

DRDO inks deal with Jindal Steel to manufacturing high nitrogen steel

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed a technology transfer agreement with Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd. (JSHL) for manufacturing high nitrogen steel (HNS). The steel alloy has significant applications in the defence sector, but currently the country is largely dependent on imports.  HNS has higher ballistic strength. It is not only tough but also has good strength. It is non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant. Its cost is about 40% less than that of rolled homogenous armour steel (RHA). Its domestic production will further the Indian Army’s quest for lighter armouring material.

Senior IAS officer Ajay Tyagi took charge as SEBI chairman

Senior IAS officer Ajay Tyagi took charge as ninth Chairman of markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He succeeded U K Sinha, who completed his six-year tenure. Mr. Tyagi is 1984 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Additional Secretary in the Finance Ministry, handling capital markets division of the Ministry. Prior to it, he has served as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He also has worked in ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Steel and Rural Development.

JS Deepak appointed as India’s Ambassador to WTO

Telecom Secretary J S Deepak was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He is 1982 batch IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre. He has been shifted from the Telecom Ministry and has made Officer on Special Duty in the Commerce Department. During his earlier stint in the Commerce Ministry, he had served as India’s chief negotiator at the WTO and for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEO) agreement.  WTO is a global international intergovernmental organisation dealing with the rules of trade between member nations. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Popular Gujarati writer Tarak Mehta passes away

Popular Gujarati writer, noted play writer and famous humorist Tarak Mehta passed away. He was 87. He was best known for his weekly column “Duniya Ne Undha Chasma” published in Mumbai based Gujarati news weekly “Chitralekha”. It was adapted in the popular comic television serial ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. His weekly column first featured in Chitralekha in March 1971. He has written around 80 books on various pressing issues. He also had served in Films Division- Mumbai as a script writer. He was awarded Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in 2015.

Luis Norton de Matos appointed new head coach of India U-17 football team

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has appointed Portugal’s Luis Norton de Matos (63) as the head coach of the India’s Under-17 team for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup scheduled to be held in October 2017 in India. He replaces Nicolai Adam who was forced to resign under controversial circumstances after a revolt from the players.

Jitu Rai wins gold in 50m free pistol in ISSF World Cup

Indian ace shooter Jitu Rai won gold medal in 50 metre air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup held in New Delhi. In this event, Jitu created a new world record with 230.1 points in final.  Indian shooter Amanpreet Singh won a silver medal in the same event. Earlier in this edition of world cup, Rai also won Bronze medal in 10m air pistol event. In the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event, Rai and Heena Sidhu had clinched the gold medal.
