Lok Sabha election 2014: EC ropes in Aamir Khan as national icon
The Election Commission signed up Bollywood actor Aamir Khan as its national icon in the run-up to 2014 Lok Sabha poll. Aamir Khan will spread awareness about the importance of voting and will urge people to cast their votes.
- Purpose: To encourage more and more people to vote in the General Elections 2014.
- Mr. Khan joined the league of four other ‘national icon’– Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, boxer MC Mary Kom, badminton ace Saina Nehwal and former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Note: The national icons will reach out to people through programmes viz. systematic voter education and electoral participation (SVEEP) that ims at increasing voter turnout as also quality of electoral participation in terms of informed and ethical voting.
