Uttar Pradesh Minister Chitranjan Swarup passes away

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (MoS) for Parliamentary Affairs Chitranjan Swarup passed away in Delhi. He was 70 and died after a prolonged illness.

He was a sitting MLA of Uttar Pradesh state assembly from Muzaffarnagar constituency, belonging to ruling Samajwadi Party.

In the current UP government led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, he was holding various portfolios including Urban Development, Urban Employment & Poverty Alleviation, Water Supply, Muslim Waqf and Overall Urban Development and Minority Welfare and Haj.

For first time, he was elected as MLA on a Congress ticket in 1974 and later on a Bhaujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket in 2002 and 2012.


Renowned Malayalam actor Paravoor Bharathan passes away

Renowned Malayalam actor Paravoor Bharathan passed away in Kochi, Kerala. He was 86 and was suffering from age-related ailments since 2009.

He was known as a versatile actor and had played different roles including negative roles, comedy roles and character roles in his 6 decade long acting career.

About Paravoor Bharathan

  • Paravoor Bharathan was born in 1928 in Kochi district of Kerala.
  • He had started his career in the late 1940s in drama and later in movies in 1950s. In his entire career he had acted in nearly 300 regional films.
  • Some of his much talked films include Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava, In Harihara Nagar, Aniathipravu and Meleparambil Aanveedu.
  • Awards: He was bestowed with Bahadoor Award in 2004.


India’s First Lady Suvra Mukherjee passes away

India’s First Lady Suvra Mukherjee, wife of President Pranab Mukherjee passed away in New Delhi. She was 74.

On 7th August 2015, she had suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to Research and Referral Army Hospital.

About Suvra Mukherjee

  • Suvra Mukherjee was born on 17th of September 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh).
  • She was married to Mr Pranab Mukherjee in 1957 and they have three children- Sharmistha Mukherjee, Abhijit Mukherjee and Indrajit Mukherjee.
  • Suvra was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet and was an ardent fan of India’s national poet Rabindranath Tagore.
  • She had founded the Geetanjali Troupe to propagate Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy as expressed through his songs and dance-dramas.
  • For many years she had performed in the poet’s dance-dramas in different parts of India and across Europe, Asia and Africa.
  • Suvra was also highly talented painter who had many solo and group exhibitions to her credit.
  • She had also written two books Chokher Aloey (personal account of her close interaction with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi) and Chena Achenai Chin (a travelogue recounting her visit to China).
