April 18: World Heritage Day
Every year April 18 is observed as the World Heritage Day. The day is also celebrated as the International Day of Monuments and sites.
Highlights
The World Heritage Day is celebrated to create awareness about diversity, heritage and vulnerability of the monuments and heritage sites. The World Heritage sites are defined as man-made areas or natural areas that hold international importance and requires special protection.
Theme
This year the World Heritage Day, 2020 is celebrated under the theme
Theme: Shared Culture, Shared heritage and Shared responsibility
The theme focuses on the current COVID-19 crisis. The theme aims to increase global unity to fight against the outbreak
India
In India, five Delhi monuments are to be illuminated to celebrate World Heritage Day. These five monuments include Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Safdarjung’s Tomb, Red Fort and Purana Qila. These sites are to be illuminated by Archaeological Survey of India.
ICOMOS
The International Council on Monuments and Sites in 1982 announced April 18 as World Heritage Day. It was approved by the UNESCO in 1983. The organization was established based on the principles of Venice Charter framed in 1964.
