Arun Kumar nominated as the Vice-Chairman of International Union of Railways
On July 22, 2020, Shri Arun Kumar was nominated as the Vice-Chairman of the International Union of Railways. Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav is the chairman.
The decision was taken at the UIC General Assembly. The International Union of Railways is also called Union Internationale Des Chemins (UIC).
The headquarters of UIC is in Paris. It is empowered to develop policy on behalf of rail sector in matters relating to security of persons, installations, and property. It promotes exchange of information among security agencies of UIC. Also, it proposes common interest projects and activities in the field of railway security.
International Union of Railways
It was founded in 1922 with 51 members. Today there are 194 members. India is an active member of the union. It has established classification of locomotives, axle arrangements, goods wagons and coaches.
UIC is the largest mover of passengers and freight after China. India has future international rail linkages to Russia.
International North-South Transport Corridor
The International North-South Transport Corridor is a 7,200 km long ship, road and rail route moving freight between India, Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Central Asia and Europe.
