Home Ministry cancels licences of 20,000 NGOs for FCRA violation

The Union Home Ministry has cancelled licences of 20 thousand NGOs for violating various provisions of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Thus, banning these NGOs from receiving foreign funds. 14 NGOs have been put under the prior permission category while papers of the two NGOs are under examination. As per FCRA, if an NGO is put under prior permission category, it is barred to receive foreign funding from abroad without taking permission from the Home ministry. Now, of 33 thousand such organizations registered in the country, now only 13 thousand NGOs are legally valid.

Foundation Stone of new Regional Institute of Education held at Nellore

The foundation stone for a new Regional Institute of Education (RIE) was laid at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. The new institution is being established to offer teacher education programmes like B.Sc, B.Ed, M.Ed, BA, Ph.D., etc., and undertake research and development of Resource Materials on school and teacher education. It will also help in capacity building of Teachers and Teacher Educators, strengthen implementation of Central Government’s Schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), ICT in schools. It will also help to strengthen linkages among State Education Agencies besides addressing educational needs of the States.

24th National Children’s Science Congress inaugurated in Pune

The 24th National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) was inaugurated at Vidyapratisthan’s Institute of Information Technology, Baramati in Pune, Maharashtra. The five day Science Congress will see participation of more than 700 child scientists under one umbrella to showcase their talents. The top 25 projects will be shortlisted and respective students will be provided with training support. For the most innovative projects, NCSC will help the student with patenting their respective projects. Students from across India, ASEAN Countries and Gulf Countries are participating in it. The NCSC has evolved from an exhibition to an opportunity for children from India and Asia to exchange ideas and garner exposure. Since 1993 it has provided innovative programme for young scientists of India and beyond to inspire, empower and expand their mind’s horizon to the world. NCSC is an open forum for young scientists in the age group of 10-17 and is not restricted only to school going children.

Maharashtra Government to create new ministry for welfare of VJNT, OBCs and SBCs

Maharashtra Government has decided to create a new ministry for welfare of Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT), Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Special Backward Classes (SBCs). A proposal to this effect was approved by the state cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The separate ministry would be created for OBCs which would be headed by an independent minister.

CM Devendra Fadnavis launches Transform Maharashtra initiative

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched Transform Maharashtra initiative in IIT Bombay’s Mood Indigo festival. Under it, he spoke about issues involving role of youth in the governance. During the launch he had conversation with students on his vision for Maharashtra. Under the initiative, the state government is planning to reach out to one crore youth.  It aims to provide an opportunity to college students to put their heads together and come up with policy or programme level solutions to 11 critical challenges being faced by the state at present.

MP Government launches Nagar Uday Abhiyan

Madhya Pradesh Government has recently launched “Nagar Uday Abhiyan” in all 378 urban bodies in the state. The main aim the abhiyan is to assess services provided to citizens and bring them at standard live, inform lower income class people residing in slums in urban areas about public welfare schemes. It also seeks to provide benefit of Antodaya, also inform them about works carried out for urban development and ensure contribution of citizens and other agencies in urban development schemes. The first phase will be held between December 25 and 28, 2016; the 2nd phase will be conducted between January 3 and 15, 2017 and the 3rd phase will take place between January 20 and February 5, 2017.

Kurukshetra University to sign MoU with three foreign Universities in field of higher education

Kurukshetra University will soon sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three foreign Universities in the field of higher education. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal has approved a proposal in this regard. These three Universities included Renmin University of China, S. Toraighrov Pavlodar State University Kazakhstan and Pavlodar State Pedagogical Institute Kazakhstan.

UP CM Akhilesh Yadav lays foundation stone of Film, Television and Liberal Arts Institute

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav laid a foundation stone of the Film, Television and Liberal Arts Institute at the state capital Lucknow. The institute will come up near Lucknow in an area of 14 acres of land. It will be autonomous institute for studies of cinematic and liberal arts. It will impart courses on film, television and other liberal arts. It will have state of the art technology and world class facilities to educate nearly 500 students seeking expertise in film making and other allied subjects.

Haryana Government plans to promote installation of solar water pumping systems

Haryana Government has planned launch scheme to promote installation of solar water pumping systems in the State. As many as 3,050 solar pump sets of two and five horsepower will be installed under the scheme. The scheme would be implemented in two phases. Under this scheme, 90% subsidy will be offered to the farmers to install solar water pump sets for irrigation. The cost of the subsidy would be borne by the Central and State Governments.

Super Typhoon Nock-ten (Nina) makes Landfall in Philippines

The powerful typhoon “Nock-Ten” recently made landfall at the coast near Catanduanes Island in Philippines with winds up to 140 km/ hour. The typhoon locally was known as Nina in the Philippines. The typhoon is expected to pass across the main island of Luzon, before heading into the South China Sea. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre had forecasted sustained winds of 231 kilometres an hour and gusts of 278 kilometres an hour when the typhoon makes landfall.

Russian Military Plane Tu-154 Crashes into Black Sea

A Russian military Tu-154 plane has crashed into the Black Sea, killing all 92 on board. It disappeared from radar 20 minutes after taking off from A dler airport in Sochi for refuelling at refuelling. The plane was carrying service personnel as well as dozens of members of the Alexandrov military band (also known as the Red Army Choir) as well as journalists to Syria. Russian Defence Ministry has ruled out terror attack behind the crash. It is being claimed that the crash may be due to pilot error or a technical fault.

Gurgaon may become first in country to get Caterpillar Train

Haryana Government has taken the lead to set up a pilot corridor for the “Caterpillar Train (C-Train)”, a new concept for urban mass-transit solution in Gurgaon. It has been designed by an Indian Railway officer Ashwani Upadhyaya which had won a global award at the MIT in the United States. The C Train concept was co-invented by Ashwani Upadhyaya along with Emil Jacob, both PhD scholars at MIT. C-Train, envisages a citywide network of lightweight, elevated train coaches running at about 100 kmph on a track supported by poles bent into arches.

US Astronomer and dark matter pioneer Vera Rubin passes away

US Astronomer Vera Rubin, whose pioneering work on galaxy rotation rates led to the theory of dark matter passed away. She was 88. In 1974, Rubin had discovered that the stars at the edges of galaxies moved faster than expected. Her studies had earned her numerous honours, including being the second female astronomer to be elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. Dark matter is an unidentified type of matter that comprises approximately 27% of t mass and energy in the observable universe.

Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake passes away

Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake passed away. He was 83. He had served twice as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, first from 2000 to 2001 and then from 2005 to 2010. In his second term he was appointed Prime Minister by former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He has also held many key ministerial positions since 1970. He was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for more than 60 years. Prior to his death, he was serving as a senior advisor to incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena.

Shahrukh Khan receives doctorate from Maulana Azad National Urdu University

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan was conferred honorary doctorate (honorary PhD) at the 6th convocation of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad for extraordinary contribution towards promotion of Urdu language and culture. Beside him, Rekhta Foundation founder Sanjiv Saraf was conferred the ‘honorius causa’ (doctor of letters). During the convocation ceremony of the university as many as 2,885 graduates and post graduates and 276 M. Phil and Ph.D from various disciplines in regular courses were awarded degrees.

Yuki Bhambri wins 2016 ITF Hong Kong F4 Futures title

Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri hhas won the title of the $10000 ITF Hong Kong F4 Futures. It was his 11th title on the ITF Pro Circuit. In the final, he defeated Japan’s Shintaro Imai by 6-4, 7-5 score. With this win, he takes away $1440 in prize money along with 18 ATP ranking points. On the other hand, Cheng-Peng Hsieh (Taipei or Taiwan) and Pak Long Yeung (Hong Kong) won the doubles title by defeating Karan Rastogi and Jack Wong from Hong Kong by 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 score.
