Railway Ministry launches India’s first Antyodaya Express
Indian Railways launched the country’s first Antyodaya Express between Ernakulam (Kerala) and Howrah (West Bengal). Antyodaya Express is a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, for the common man to be operated on dense routes. It has facilities like cushioned luggage racks which can serve as seats, LED lights, modular toilets, pleasing interior colour scheme and others. Indian Railwaysalso flagged off the fourth Humsafar Express between Sriganganagar (Rajasthan) and Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu). The new train is fully air-conditioned third AC service with an optional service for meals.

Russia, China veto UN resolution to impose sanctions on Syria
Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution that aimed to impose sanctions on Syria over chemical weapons use. The resolution was drafted by Britain, France and United States. It won nine votes in favour, while three countries opposed it-China, Russia and Bolivia. Kazakhstan, Egypt and Ethiopia remained abstained from voting. UN resolutions require nine positive votes and no veto to be adopted. It was the seventh time that Russia, has used its veto power to shield Syrian regime, its top military ally. China is also one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of UNSC joined Russia in vetoing six resolutions on Syria.

Cisco and Reliance Jio to build world’s largest All-IP Digital Services Platform
Reliance Jio has announced collaboration with networking giant Cisco to build world’s largest All-IP Digital Services Platform. It will further expand Jios existing multi-terabit network capacity to offer a combination of high-speed data, VoLTE, mobile video, digital commerce, media, cloud and payment services. Jio’s netwrok is the first of its kind globally to reach fastest growth to 100 million broadband and VoLTE customers milestone within six months of launch. Jio’s All-IP digital platform is built on Cisco’s Open Network Architecture and Cloud Scale Networking technologies featuring IP/MPLS, spanning areas, including Wi-Fi, data centre, security and contact centre solutions.
GIFT-City partners with Dubai International Financial Centre
Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) have signed a MoU to increase cooperation and collaboration between the two financial centres. The MoU calls for sharing of best practices, exchange of information on banking, financial service and securities, regulation and legislation and cooperation in training, among others. It will also help in exchange of information on trends in relevant international financial services activities and products, in particular within the FinTech field.
Core sector growth slows down to 3.4% in January 2017
The growth of eight core sectors slowed down to a five-month low of 3.4% in January 2017 mainly due to contraction in output of refinery products, fertiliser and cement. The growth of these eight core sectors was 5.7% in January 2016. The eight core sectors comprise Coal (weight: 4.38 %), Crude Oil (5.22 %), Natural Gas (1.71 %), Petroleum Refinery (5.94%), Fertilizer (1.25%), Steel (6.68%), Cement (2.41%), Electricity generation (10.32%). These core industries comprise nearly 38 % of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) which details out the growth of various sectors in an economy such as mining, electricity and manufacturing.

Sumit Mullick appointed as Chief Secretary of Maharashtra
Senior IAS officer Sumit Mullick was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. In this regard, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis signed the file approving the appointment. He will succeed Swadheen Kshatriya who was due for retirement on 31 January 2017, but was given a month’s extension. Mullick is a 1982 batch IAS officer. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) and as the Chief Protocol Officer in the General Administration department. Earlier, he had served as the Divisional Commissioner of Amravati and had worked as Secretary of School Education. He also had served as Secretary to the Governor.
Famous author Neil Gaiman named Goodwill Ambassador of UNHCR
Internationally acclaimed author Neil Gaiman was appointed as a global goodwill ambassador of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Refugee Agency. Since 2013, Gaiman was working closely UNHCR and campaigned for its work through media interviews and via his social media channels. He also had supported several fundraising initiatives and UNHCR campaigns and events by travelling to Jordan to meet Syrian refugees. Neil Gaiman is an English author of novels, short fiction, graphic novels, comic books, audio theatre and films. He has won numerous awards.

Tarun Kona and Alwin Francis win Uganda International Series title
Indian shuttlers Tarun Kona and Alwin Francis have won the men’s doubles gold at the 2017 Uganda International Series. The Indian duo defeated Aatish Lubah and Georges Julien Paul of Mauritius by 21-8, 21-14 score in the final match. The top seeded pair is ranked 55 currently. They had paired up in 2015 and have won three International Series events together till now.
Shantha Rangaswamy becomes first woman to get BCCI lifetime achievement award
Former Indian women’s cricketer Shantha Rangaswamy (63) became the first female cricketer to be nominated for the BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She is pioneer of Indian women’s cricket and was Indian women’s cricket team’s first captain way back in 1976. She was also Indian women’s cricket’s first international centurion and the first captain to win a Test. She is also the first woman cricketer to win the Arjuna Award. In her career, she had played 16 Tests from 1976 to 1991, captaining in 8 matches and 19 ODIs, captaining in 16 matches from 1981 to 1984. Currently, she is cricket writer and working as an executive (General Manager) at Canara Bank (Bangalore Region).
Lipstick Under My Burkha wins Award at Glasgow Film Festival
Lipstick Under My Burkha has won the audience award at the Glasgow Film Festival. It has been directed by Alankrita Shrivastava. The film stars Ratna Pathak Shah and Konkona Sensharma in key roles. Recently, it was refused certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)
