Facts Sheet: Kochi Metro Phase – I

Pinarayi Vijayan Chief Minister of Kerala recently inaugurated the phase – I construction of the Kochi Metro through video conferencing. The newly constructed three-kilometer stretch will increase the total length of Kochi Metro Network to 28.61 Km.

Design and Operation

KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited) has dedicated a complete wall inside the metro coach for the fisherman community. Fisherman community played an important role in the evacuation and help operation during the Kerala’s flood. KMRL has also done a tremendous work. The organisation has employed people form LGBT community in its daily operational work. While doing so the KMRL has become the first such organisation to appoint the transgender persons in the country. In its attempt to make the coaches appear more unique and attractive the metro coach has been painted with various unique themes such as, Kerala’s heritage, culture, art, Western Ghats and etc.

Which payment model does it follow?

The Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system is a critical core component of any Metro Rail Network. Following the path now taken, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited has developed a unique PPP model. In this new model the capital investment as well as the maintenance cost of the Metro rail is taken care by a bank and the bank in return launched its co-branded Metro card. This is the first time the world has seen such an innovate model. This model is expected to change funding models for AFC systems in the metro industry globally.

What is expected next?

With the total expenditure of 6218 crore Indian Rupee the construction work of Phase – I is now complete. The Phase – II will be implemented soon provided it gets central government final nod and approval. In the virtual inauguration the CM flagged off the train Petta station at 12:30 PM. The increased operational routes are expected to handle passengers up to one lakh per day.
