India’s first: Kochi-Muziris Biennale kicks off
Kochi is hosting India’s first biennale, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an international exhibition which showcases artworks across a variety of mediums including film, installation, painting, sculpture, new media and performance art from Indian and International artists. Alongside the exhibition the Biennale will offer a rich programme of talks, seminars, screenings, music, workshops and educational activities for school children and students.
What is a ‘Biennale’?
- Biennale is Italian for "every other year" and can be used to describe any event that happens every two years.
- It is most prolifically used within the art world to describe an international manifestation of contemporary art, originating from the use of the phrase for the Venice Biennale, which was first held in 1895.
