March 21: International Day of Forests

Every year, the United Nations celebrate International Day of Forest on March 21. The Day is being celebrated since 2012. It aims to increase awareness and importance of forests. The day also focuses on the significance of trees outside the forests. Also, the day is celebrated to save forests.

Highlights

The idea of International Day of Forests was introduced at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture.

Why March 21?

March 21 has been chosen to mark the international day of forests as it is the vernal Equinox in the northern hemisphere and autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere. The Vernal Equinox occurs when the earth enters the first spring.

Significance

Every year more than 13 million hectares of forests are lost. The mass deforestation results in 12% to 18% of world carbon emission.

    They celebrate the gift of life by going green. Abhayaranya is a luxuriant man-made forest sanctuary by the residents of Anandwan in the tehesil of Warora, Zilla Chandrapur, in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
