The idea of International Day of Forests was introduced at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture.
Why March 21?
March 21 has been chosen to mark the international day of forests as it is the vernal Equinox in the northern hemisphere and autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere. The Vernal Equinox occurs when the earth enters the first spring.
Every year more than 13 million hectares of forests are lost. The mass deforestation results in 12% to 18% of world carbon emission.
