May 21: National Anti-Terrorism Day

Every year on May 21, India observes National Anti-Terrorism Day. The day is observed to mark the death anniversary of the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Highlights

Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth prime minister of India. He served as the prime minister of the country between 1984 and 1989. He was assassinated in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu in May 1991.

National Anti-Terrorism Day is marked to raise awareness about terrorism and its impact on human society. The day also spreads the message of peace and humanity.

Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi took the office of Prime Minister after his mother, the former PM of India, Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated while he campaigned for a Lok Sabha candidate at Sriperumbudur. He was killed in a bomb blast. The Supreme Court confirmed that Mr Gandhi was killed by the LTTE organization. India was to send an Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka to contain the activities of LTTE.
