Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskars for 2018 announced

Sangeet Natak Akademi, National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, has announced 2018 Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskars for artistes artistes below 40 years of age.

Key Highlights

The Sangeet Natak Akademi’s General Council at its meeting held on 26 June 2019 at Guwahati, Assam unanimously selected 32 (Including one joint Awards) Indian artists who have made a mark as young talents in their respective fields of performing arts for Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2018.

The artists are selected for Yuva Puraskar 2018 in field of-

  • Music: 8 recipients
  • Dance: 8 recipients
  • Theatre: 7 recipients
  • Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre and Puppetry- 8 recipients

About Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar

The award was instituted in 2006, in memory of Ustad Bismillah Khan.

It is conferred upon young artists below 40 years of age for their talent in fields of music, dance and drama.

Yuva Puraskar will be presented at a special ceremony, by Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Objective: behind conferring award is to identify and encourage outstanding young talents in diverse fields of performing arts. The award gives them national recognition early in their life, so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication in their chosen fields.

Prize: Award carries money of Rs.25000.

About Sangeet Natak Akademi

The National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama is the apex body of performing arts in India. It was set up by Indian education ministry on 31 May 1952 and became functional the following year (in 1953).

Parent organization: Union Ministry of Culture

Function: To preserve and promote vast cultural heritage of India expressed in music, dance and drama.

It also works with governments and art academies in states and territories of India.

Internet Saathi programme to be expanded to Punjab and Odisha

Google India and Tata Trusts are set to expand their ‘Internet Saathi’ digital literacy programme for rural women to villages in Punjab and Odisha. Currently, the programme has reach of 2.6 lakh villages across 18 states.

Key Highlights

On adding Punjab and Odisha the programme will now extend its reach to 20 states in India.

In Punjab, program will cover around 5,000 villages, such as Paras Rampur, Burj, Kotli Than Singh, Vehra and from Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala districts.

In Odisha, program will cover over 16,000 villages. It has been kicked off from Sindhia in Baleshwar, Parakana in Puri, Bhuinpur in Kendrapara.

About Internet Saathi

It is joint initiative of Google India and Tata Trusts.

It aims to facilitate digital literacy among women in rural India.

The programme was launched in July 2015 and was started as a pilot in Rajasthan.

States Covered: Since 2015 it has been expanded to states including- Uttar Pradesh, , Bihar, Haryana, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana , Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Goa.

Need: It is of vital importance that women in rural India are provided with adequate opportunities and knowledge for inclusive growth and societal progress.

Internet Saathis: So far, the Internet Saathi programme has trained 70,000 Internet Saathis, who have in turn impacted 2.6 crore million women in India.

Digital Gender Divide: It has also contributed towards bridging digital gender divide in rural India. In 2015 digital gender divide in rural India (i.e. female to male ratio) was 1 in 10 and in 2018 it has increased to 4 in 10.

Significance:

Some of women trained under this initiative have started their own micro-business such as stitching, honeybee farming, and beauty parlours.

Many under programme are also driving awareness for issues like girl child education, menstrual hygiene and more within their communities.
