National Biofuel Coordination Committee: Surplus Rice to be used to make Sanitizers

On April 20, 2020, the Minister of Petroleum Shri Dharmendra Pradhan held National Biofuel Coordination Committee (NBCC) meeting. Under the meeting, it was decided that surplus rice that is available with Food Corporation of India is to be used in manufacturing ethanol that is used in hand sanitizers.

Highlights

Under the NBCC, it was decided that the surplus rice is to be used for making sanitizers and also for making Ethanol blended petrol programme. The decision has been taken in accordance with the National Policy of Biofuels, 2018

National Policy of Biofuels, 2018

Under the policy, during every crop year, when there is an oversupply of food grains as that expected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, then the surplus quantity shall be used to produce ethanol.

World Health Organization

According to the standards set by the World Health Organization, a hand sanitizer should consist of 60% to 70% of alcohol.
