Swacch Survekshan 2020

On August 20, 2020, the results of Swachh Survekshan, 2020 were announced.


For the fourth consecutive time, Indore, Madhya Pradesh bagged the cleanest city in the country. It was followed by Surat of Gujarat and Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra.

Varanasi bagged the best “Ganga Town” in the survey.

Mysuru won the award of cleanest city in India.

The survey was held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.


Swachh Survekshan was first conducted in 2016. It rated 73 major cities. The second survey was held in 2017 that included 434 cities. The third survey that was held in 2018 ranked 4,203 cities and the fourth survey was held in 2019. The 2019 survey was held digitally. Thus, it made a record of first survey to be completed in a record time of 28 days.

Swachh Survekshan 2020

This year, for the first time, the GoI had integrated Swachh Survekshan League with the survey. The league made cleanliness assessments throughout the year. The parameters considered in the assessment were waste water treatment and reuse and faecal sludge management.
