Discus thrower Seema Punia qualifies for 2016 Rio Olympics

Discus thrower Seema Punia has qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August 2016. She is the 19th Indian track and field athlete to qualify for Rio Olympics.

Seema was able to qualify after throwing discus at 62.62 meters at the Pat Young’s Throwers Classic 2016 event held at Salinas (California) in the United States. She crossed the Rio Games qualification standard of 61meters with her season’s best effort of 62.62 meters and winning gold medal in the event.

This will be Seema’s third Olympic Games appearance having taken part in 2004 and 2012 where she failed to get past the qualification round on both the occasions.

Vikas Gowda wins bronze medal in Shanghai IAAF Diamond League

India’s ace discus thrower Vikas Gowda won a bronze medal in the second leg of the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League series in Shanghai, China.

In his fifth and penultimate attempt, Gowda hurled the disc to a distance of 63.90 metres to settle at third position. With this win, he has won 4,000 US Dollars besides earning one Diamond League point.

In this IAAF Diamond League series, Robert Urbanek of Poland won the Gold with a throw of 64.47 metres. Piotr Malachowski of Poland won Silver medal with a throw of 64.47m.

It should be noted that Gowda is National record holder and also 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Asian Games silver medal winner.
