ICGS Varad: First Major Defence ship to clear all acceptance Trials in a Single Sea Sortie

On February 28, 2020, the Indian Coast Guard’S ICGS Varad, an Offshore Patrol Vessel was commissioned at Chennai port. The vessel is to operate under North Eastern Coast Guard Region.

Highlights

The ICGS was built by L&T at Kattupalli near Chennai. It is 98 metres long and holds modern navigation and communication equipment. It is also equipped with 30 mm and 12.7 mm guns. The vessel also holds other onboard features such as platform management systems, integrated bridge system, high power external fire fighting system, etc.

Special Features of the vessel

The Patrol vessel is equipped with pollution responsible equipment for oil spill at sea and also swift boarding operations. It is also capable of carrying a twin-engine helicopter and also 4 high speed boats.

The vessel is the first defence ship to clear the acceptance trials in a single sea sortie. In simple words, the vessel cleared the trials of checking of its military operations in a single go.

What is Sortie?

Sortie is deployment of military unit in aircraft and shipping. It is a combat mission that an individual aircraft deploys as it takes off.

GRSE delivers Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Annie Besant to Indian Coast Guard

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) delivered Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Annie Besant to Indian Coast Guard (ICGS) in Kolkata, West Bengal. This is second in the series of five such FPVs being built by GRSE for Indian Coast Guard and the 101st warship to be delivered by shipyard.

The entire design of these FPVs has been developed in-house by GRSE as per requirements specified by ICG. At present GRSE has a strong order book position of about Rs.27,400 crore under which there are a total of 22 warships at various stages of construction.

About ICGS Annie Besant

It is a medium-range vessel with 50 metres in length, 7.5 metres in width and displacement of nearly 308 tonnes. It is designed for a maximum speed of 34 knots with an endurance of over 1,500 nautical miles.

The ICGS Annie Besant is equipped with three main engines with advanced control systems, water jet units as well as an Integrated Bridge System (IBS) with all communication and navigation systems. It is also fitted with 40/60 gun as main armament.

The FPV is capable of operations in maritime zones of country. It has powerful, fuel-efficient platforms which are designed to perform multipurpose operations such as patrolling, rescue operations, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching.
