On June 2, 2020, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijju inaugurated the India Community Coach Development Programme
The India Community Coach Development Programme is a 25-day long programme for community coaches and PE teachers all over the country. The programme has been launched to give more importance to Physical Education in schools. Both the Ministry of HRD and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are to work together to take the programme to every school. Besides regular sessions by eminent educationalists in the sports field, international expert will also participate in the programme.
The Physical Education teachers and community coaches have major role to reach every child, motivate them to participate in fitness and sports activities.
The GoI has also launched several steps to encourage people to take up fitness as their way of life. The Fit India Movement is one such step.
Fit India Movement
The Fit India Movement was launched by PM Modi. The movement highlighted the need to stay healthy amidst the modern lifestyle disorders. It was announced to celebrate the National Sports Day.
Why is the programme important?
- The WHO says that one in four adults is not active.
- The Indian Council of Medical Research says that the deaths due to Non-Communicable Diseases are increases. This can be reduced only through physical activities
- The National Family Health Survey says that 11% of women and 15% of men are hypertensive. Fitness exercises will help improve hypertensive conditions.

On April 14, 2020, Government of India launched Fit India Active Day Programme. The programme was launched under the flagship initiative of GoI called “Fit India”.
The Ministry of AYUSH has issued guidelines to implement the Fit India Active Day Programme. The programme is launched to make sure children practice fitness even when they stay home. The programme also intends to create immunity against COVID-19.
Live sessions are to be conducted under the programme. These live sessions shall be accessed by students through Instagram and Facebook. The programme has been launched under the partnership of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

The National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.
