Gaganyaan Mission: ISRO to tap technologies of local start ups

The Indian Space Research Organization has identified 17 technologies at lower costs from Indian start ups to use in Gaganyaan mission.

The technologies identified includes food and medicine for astronauts, life support systems, inflatable habitats, thermal protection technologies and anti-radiation technologies. ISRO will also share its intellectual properties with the companies participating in the mission.

India had sent its Air Force pilots to Russia to get trained for the Gaganyaan mission.

Gaganyaan Mission

Gaganyaan is a crewed space programme of ISRO. Under the programme, three air force pilots will be carried to space. The crewed mission is to be launched in December 2021. Along with the crew, a female looking robot Vyommitra is to accompany the astronauts. The robot will provide warnings if the environmental changes within the cabin gets uncomfortable to the astronauts.

The flight is for 7 days.

The Gaganyaan Mission was initiated during the eleventh five year plan. The total cost of the mission is estimated to be Rs 124 billion. Rs 500 million was released in 2012. In 2018, the GoI approved 100 billion rupees.

The plan of startups being involved was also announced by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman during her fifth tranche of Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan announcement. The scheme has allocated Rs 20 lakh crore rupess. Before to the scheme, GoI had also launched Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana.

“Vyom Mitra”-ISRO’s half Humanoid-An experimental mission of Gaganyaan

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) is to send a half-humanoid robot called the “Vyom Mitra” as an experimental mission to Gaganyaan. Vyom Mitra means a friend in Sky.

ISRO introduced Vyom Mitra at the “Human Space Flight and Exploration-Present Challenges and Future Trends” seminar that was held in Bengaluru. The robot is to fly in two unmanned mission that are planned in December 2020 and in June 2021.

About Vyom Mitra

The robot can speak two languages namely Hindi and English. It can mimic human activities such as recognizing other humans and responding to their queries. The robot can handle switch panel operations. It is also capable of providing air pressure change warnings.

Gaganyaan mission

In order to make the first human space flight programme, Gaganyaan successful, ISRO has been taking several initiatives. The food for the astronauts is being developed by the Defence Food Research Laboratory. The astronauts to travel to space received their training in Russia.

Gaganyaan Mission was first recommended by ISRO’s Policy Planning Committee in 2004. In 2006, the preliminary studies under the name “Orbital Vehicle” began. In 2008, the design to carry two astronauts was finalized. In 2014, the testing of the launch vehicle GSLV-Mk III was successful. In 2018, the pad abort test was conducted and succeeded by ISRO scientists. In 2019, astronauts completed their training in Russia.
