The Reusable Launch Vehicle Program was launched by ISRO in 2016. It aims to cut down the launch cost by reusing the spacecraft. So far, the RLV (Reusable Launch Vehicle) has been tested over water. For the first time, ISRO will test in land.
The RLV will function as a space shuttle that will carry a payload to space and glide back to the earth. While returning, it is to land like a normal aircraft. The landing of the RLV is to be tested at Challakere in Chitradurga district in Karnataka.
- The Aeronautical Test Range has 2.2 km runway
- The RLV will be dropped from a helicopter
- The test is critical to India’s Human Space Flight program – Gaganyaan.
- The following four aspects of the RLV are to be tested
- Hypersonic flight
- Autonomous landing
- Powered Cruise flight
- Hypersonic Flight with air – breathing propulsion.
- There are two stages in the recovery process. The first stage is similar to that of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 booster. The second stage is an advanced version of RLV testing done in 2016.

The Indian Space flight mission Gaganyaan will orbit the Earth for seven days and is scheduled in December 2021. Four Indian Air Force Pilots are to participate in the mission. The training for the pilots to enter space has commenced in Russia.
The mission is undertaken in the low earth orbit at 300 – 400 km from the earth. It would comprise an effective crew escape system and ejection provisions for the pilots in case of rocket explosion.
Russia’s contribution in the mission
Russia will offer semi cryogenic rocket engine technology to India under India’s Make – in – India Program. Later the rocket engines will be made in India
Apart from this India is planning to set a NaviC station in Russia and Russia will also be allowed to set up a NaviC station base in Bengalaru, India. The negotiations are on and the deal is yet to be signed.
The announcement about the training was made at the inaugural function of “Citizen Familiarization Program” by the VSSC – Vikram Sarabhai Space Center Director S Somnath
Citizen Familiarization Program
The Program was conducted during the celebrations of World Space Week 2019. The main purpose of the program is to inform the citizens of the country for what purpose their tax money is being utilized in ISRO. ISRO had invited senior citizens of the country and was attended by more than 400 senior citizens. ISRO also sought their advises and suggestions
