Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the inaugural of first edition Khelo India School Games (KISG) open at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
The first KISG were held under the Khelo India Programme to highlight India’s young sporting talent and showcase India’s sports potential. It was held across 16 disciplines in Under-17 age category. 5,000 school children from 29 states and seven union territories participated in mega sporting event held from January 31 to February 8, 2018. Total of 199 gold medals, 199 silver medals and 275 bronze medals were awarded at first KISG.
Khelo India Programme
The Khelo India programme was introduced by Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs to revive sports culture in India at grass-root level. Its objective is to build strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as great sporting nation. It is expected to help scout young talent from schools in various disciplines and groom them as future sports champions. Talented players will be identified under it in priority sports disciplines at various levels by High-Powered Committed and each will be provided annual financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh for 8 years.
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched Pledge for Khelo India at Khelo India School Games Carnival in Delhi. The pledge resonates with vision of Khelo India programme and is aimed at inspiring youngsters to build mass participation and excellence in sports. It also is promise to participant and encourages sportsmanship spirit.
Khelo India School Games
Khelo India School Games was launched under Khelo India Programme. It was held at multiple venues across Delhi from January 31 to February 8, 2018. It encompassed 16 sports disciplines under which overall 199 gold medals, 199 silver medals, 275 bronze medals, to were awarded. It aimed at creating platform to showcase hidden talent, fostering young sports prodigies and creating awareness and cognizance about physical fitness as well as good health amongst youngsters.
Khelo India programme
The Khelo India Programme was launched in 2016 for building inclusive and comprehensive sports ecosystem in country. It aims at inculcating sports into the day to day lives of youngsters early on in their lives. It subsumed earlier three different schemes into one namely: Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) and Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS).
