BIS to set up Pashmina Testing Centre in Leh

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced setting up Pashmina testing centre in Leh region of Jammu and Kashmir to check the quality of pashmina collected. It will be set up in partnership with lab of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh. The centre will have standards testing lab, machines and scientists to check the quality of pashmina collected. It also released BI Standards of Pashmina. BIS will also train the locals, with cooperation of LAHDC in marking of the standards to save the time and money.

About Pashmina

It is a fine type of Kashmiri wool (also known as ‘cashmere’ in the West). The word Pashmina in Kashmiri means ‘Soft Gold’. It is used to make shawl, scarf and wrap or stole. This unique variety of wool is obtained from four distinct breeds of Cashmere goats namely Malra from Kargil area in Kashmir region, Changthangi (or Kashmir Pashmina goat) from Changthang Plateau in Kashmir region, Chegu from Himachal Pradesh and Chyangara (or Nepalese Pashmina goat) from Nepal. Kashmir Pashmina has been accorded Geographical indication (GI) tag under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

Maitri Bridge: Longest Suspension Bridge

Indian Army built the longest suspension bridge over Indus river in Leh in just 40 days and the bridge is named as Maitri Bridge.

Maitri Bridge

  • The bridge was constructed by the combat engineers of ‘Sahas aur Yogyata’ regiment of ‘Fire and Fury Corps’ of the Indian Army.
  • The bridge is 260-feet long.
  • This cable suspension bridge is expected to give a major boost to connectivity in remote areas in Ladakh.
  • The bridge is constructed using around 500 tonnes of bridge equipment and construction material.
  • Maitri Bridge has been dedicated to the people of India to commemorate the 20th year of Kargil Vijay Divas.

The bridge is part of the central government plans to all-weather road connectivity in the region.
