GoI boosts Rural Development schemes

On April 24, 2020, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Family Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar held video conference with State rural development ministers. During the meet, the minister shared plan of GoI to boost rural development scheme


The following schemes are to be boosted under rural development programme

  • Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS)
  • Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
  • National Rural Livelihood Mission

The plan is to create employment in rural areas and to strengthen rural infrastructure, facilitate diversification of rural livelihoods. The schemes have been selected based on the relaxation granted in non-containment areas by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Funds Allocated

The Ministry of Rural Development has so far released Rs 36,000 crores to the states and union territories for the year 2020-21. The scheme of MGNREGA has been allocated with Rs 20, 225 crores. However, the funds are to be used to clear the outstanding dues of MGNREGA scheme in the previous year.

It is to be noted that the GoI has recently launched the E-Gram Swaraj and Swamitva Scheme to help in developmental activities and to reduce land disputes respectively.

Core Strategy Group formed in CSIR

On April 13, 2020, a core strategy group was formed in CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). The group will work towards rapid and economical diagnostics, digital and molecular surveillance and repurposing of drugs.


The GoI has not yet displayed list of dedicated hospitals for COVID-19. For now, when a person is suspicious over his infection or symptoms, he has to contact dedicated call centres of the central and state health departments.

However, there are dedicated health centres operating for COVID-19.

Other Measures

Under National Rural Livelihood Mission, over 78,000 Self Help Groups have so far made 1.96 crores of masks. Apart from this around 39 domestic manufacturers are involved in production of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) kits.

Also, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, so far, the GoI has disbursed Rs 28,256 crores.

Scheme wise

Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, free cylinders were delivered. Rs 9,930 has been disbursed so far under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana to women account holders.
