WHO: Independent Inquiry in handling of COVID-19

On May 19, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that it will initiate independent review in handling COVID-19 pandemic. In order to achieve this, the organization is to launch “Resolution on COVID-19 response”.

The main aim of the review is to put an end to the international blame game in the origin of COVID-19. The resolution was taken at the 73rd World Health Assembly that was held through video conference. India was represented by the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.

Around 116 countries backed the resolution of independent review. India backed the resolution. The idea of resolution was initiated by Australia. However, the resolution was drafted by European Union. China opposed the resolution.

Why is China opposing?

According to the available information so far, the COVID-19 is a zoonotic disease that spreads from animals to humans. Its outbreak has been in Wuhan, China and has rapidly spread all over the world. Different countries have adopted different ways to tackled the crisis. This is also to be a part of the investigation.

India joins 61 nations in WHO to identify Zoonotic source of COVID-19

On May 18, 2020, India joined 61 other countries in the World Health Organization to identify the source of COVID-19. China and US are not a part of the resolution.

The countries together moved a proposal at the WHO to identify zoonotic source. Only three permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have backed the resolution namely Russia, France and UK. The other countries to support the resolution includes South Korea, Japan, Australia, South Africa, India, New Zealand, etc.

From the SAARC countries, only India, Bhutan and Bangladesh have signed the resolution. Other members such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Maldives and Afghanistan have not signed the resolution.

The step is important as the bigger economies, especially China and US are politicizing the origin of the virus.
