NAVIC Messaging System for Fisheries Department

On March 17, 2020, the Department of Space reported at the Parliament that ISRO has designed NAVIC messaging system and receiver. The system is currently used by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information system (INCOIS)

Highlights

The system is used to broadcast emergency warning messages in cases such as tsunami, cyclone, high waves. The technology has been transferred by ISRO to 5 industries in India. One of them is the fisheries industry. ISRO has so far distributed 250 units of these systems to the coastal fishermen in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

NAVIC

The NAVIC is Navigation in Indian Constellation. It is an Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). Developed by ISRO. There are 8 satellites in the constellation. The main objective of NAVIC is to provide continuous surveillance of the Indian sub-continent.

IRNSS

The IRNSS provides two services namely Standard Positioning Services and Restricted Services. The Standard Positioning Services are provided to all users. On the other hand, restricted services are provided only to authorized users. The main applications of IRNSS include integration with mobiles, terrestrial aerial and marine navigation, precise timing, mapping, etc.

Fishermen

The systems will be carried by the fishermen. The device offers potential fishing zone advisories. This will help fishermen to stay within international boundaries. The system also gives warning about Oceanic wave forecasts and high wave alerts.

Marathon: Roscosmos to venture into Internet of things (IoT) with the launch of new satellite system

Russia’s state space corporation (Roscosmos) has planned to venture into Internet of things (IoT) with launch of new satellite system named ‘Marathon’. The new satellite system will be part of Russia’s Sphere satellite constellation, which will be fully established by 2026. The number of satellites in Marathon system are not revealed yet. The federation’s GLONASS navigation, a satellite communication system and data relay satellite set-up will be other equipment in the constellation.

Background

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved Sphere constellation project, which involves the construction and deployment of 640 satellites. There are several segments of the satellite communication. USA’s Iridium has been long operating successfully on voice satellite communications market. OneWeb and Starlink dominate broadband Internet segment. IoT is the third segment of the satellite communication. Work in this segment will be successful if services are provided at lowest prices as the other systems also provide such services as well.

Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT is a network of devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, home appliances and vehicles, connected to internet, which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Blockchain technology has potential to address security risks to IoT as it provides a shield against data tampering by labelling each block of data.
