The 2018 edition of World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS 2018) was held at VigyanBhawan in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
WSDS is flagship forum of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). It seeks to bring together global leaders and thinkers in the fields of sustainable development, energy and environment sectors on common platform.
The theme of WSDS 2018 is ‘Partnerships for a Resilient Planet’. It seeks to create action frameworks to resolve some of most urgent challenges facing developing economies in backdrop of climate change.
The thematic tracks at WSDS 2018 included discussions on issues related to sustainability, including carbon markets and pricing, sustainable transport, resilient cities, solar energy and refrigerant technologies.
It addressed wide variety of issues, including combating land degradation, effective waste management mechanisms to make cities free of landfills free. It also addressed issues related to combating air pollution effectively, measures to increase resource and energy efficiency, facilitate transition to clean energy and create financial mechanisms to enable effective climate change mitigation.
Over 2000 delegates had participated in the summit, including policy makers, researchers, think tanks, diplomats and corporates from around the world
WSDS has replaced TERI’s earlier called Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS). The first DSDS was organised in 2005. It underscored need for businesses and private sector to take lead in poverty reduction and to ensure rapid and sustained adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

TERI is a non-profit research institution that conducts research work in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development. It aims to focus on formulating local and national level strategies for shaping global solutions to critical issues. It was established in 1974 as Tata Energy Research Institute and was renamed The Energy and Resources Institute in 2003.

New Delhi-based The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) was ranked second among world’s best climate think tank by the International Centre for Climate Governance (ICCG).
TERI was ranked number two under the category ‘2016 Top Climate Think Tanks in the Rest of the World-Absolute Global Rankings’ during ICCG’s 23rd annual conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) in Athens, Greece.
ICCG is an internationally-renowned body whose activities focus on the design of climate policy and related governance issues. It rankings helps to highlight the scale and magnitude of work done by the think tanks working in the field of climate change.
About The Energy Resources Institute (TERI)
TERI is a non-profit research, policy research organisation that conducts research work in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development. It was established in 1974 as Tata Energy Research Institute and was renamed The Energy and Resources Institute in 2003.
It aims to focus on formulating local and national level strategies for shaping global solutions to critical issues. Its key focus lies in promoting clean energy, water management, pollution management, sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
Presently, it has over 1200 employees especially research professionals from different disciplines pertaining to issues of environment and energy. In 2013, it was ranked as the topmost global think-tank by the ICCG.
