United Nations: Tehrik-i-Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud of Pakistan declared global terrorist

The United Nations Security Council has added Baitullah Mehsud of Pakistan to ISIL and Al-Qaida sanctions list. This has brought in asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo to the Pakistani national.

Highlights

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Terror in Pakistan (TTP) leader Noor Wali Mehsud was designated as global terrorist by the United Nations for participating in financing and planning acts in support of Al-Qaida.

In June 2018, Mehsud was named the head of Tehrik e-Taliban Pakistan after the death of Maulana Fazlullah.

Attacks

The TTP was black listed by the United Nations in 2011. The group has claimed responsibility for deadly terrorist attacks in Pakistan. This includes attack on Pakistani security forces in July 2019, bomb attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in August 2019. The group has also claimed responsibility for bombing Times Square in 2010
