UNSC: Pakistan request to designate four Indians as Terrorists rejected
The United Nations Security Council recently rejected Pakistan request to list four Indians as terrorists. Pakistan wanted to add four Indian nationals under ISIS and Al-Qaeda operations. The request was backed by France, USA, UK, Germany and Belgium. The UNSC rejected mainly due to lack of evidence.
The permanent members that backed India were USA, UK and France. On the other hand, the non-permanent members that backed India were Germany and Belgium.
What is the issue?
In September 2019, Pakistan alleged four Indians working in Afghanistan had formed an Afghanistan based Indian terror syndicate. According to Pakistan, they were organising a banned terror group called the Jammt-Ul-Ahrar and Tekreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
Pakistan wants the UNSC to take an open debate on the above issue. However, the UNSC turned down the request as Pakistan is not a member of UNSC.
Why did Pakistan make such a move?
- Pakistan is trying to attempt to target India ahead of January 2021 when India is to join the UNSC as a non-permanent member for two years.
- Also, India succeeded in naming Jaish-e-Mohammad chief as a global terrorist after repeated attempts since 2009. This was not received well by Pakistan. This was because this proved Pakistan of terrorism supporter.
- The tension between India and Pakistan increased after Abrogation of Article 370 by India. Countering this, Pakistan released a new political map that included Ladakh, Sir Creek, Jammu and Kashmir and Junagadh.
- Pakistan opposes India’s leadership in dealing COVID-19 crisis in the SAARC region
Pakistan’s attempts to claim Indians in international soil as terrorists is only tainting its image in the international community. On the other hand, India’s efforts of combating terrorism has been internationally acclaimed. For instance, India updated its Look East Policy to Act East Policy to give importance to security and counter terrorism along with economic cooperations.
India has to be concerned for its securtity due to recent conflicts between India and China and also the closeness of Pakistan and China. Currently, India requires international support amidst the rising tensions in its neighbourhood.
